Is Your Cart Before Your Horse?

(Listen to this post, here.) It turns out that I’ve been lying to you.  Well, okay, maybe not exactly lying. Let’s call it oversimplifying. For a long time now (years), I’ve been talking about the importance of simply stating what you do when you meet somebody new. Small firms and solos like us live in a Word of Mouth world; we don’t spend money on advertising or promotion. Everything is referral-based. So if you want people to understand and remember you – let alone, refer you to others – you have to figure out […] Click to read more…

Does Your Difference Make a Difference?

(Listen to this post, here.) There’s a bank not far from my office with a very simple tagline: America’s Most Convenient Bank.  I don’t know on what basis they have earned that distinction, but if it’s a function of the number of hours they are open each week, I’d have to agree. The one near me, for example, is open 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM during the week (7:00 PM on Fridays), as well as five hours on Saturday and four hours on Sunday. (I’m not even sure I’m awake that much.) Holidays […] Click to read more…

Wrestling With Reality

(Listen to this post, here.) There was a time when I unhesitantly told people I was six feet, one inch tall. I’m not certain it was ever precisely true, but close enough that the state of Massachusetts had no qualms about listing it on my driver’s license. Today, though, and thanks to the ravages of time, if I were to make the same claim I would be flat out lying. I am, at last count, just under six feet. My 18-year-old son, Jonathan, on the other hand, is continually creeping […] Click to read more…

Who’s Got The Power?

(Listen to this post, here.) It would be obnoxiously first world-centric of me to complain too loudly about the past 36 hours.  Yes, we have been (and continue to be) without power since the big snow storm hit the Northeast Wednesday night. And yes, that outage has prevented us from refrigerating our food, heating our house, and watching the latest episode of “This Is Us” that I recorded on Tuesday night (no spoilers, please). But at this point, at least, I’m still classifying all of it as “an inconvenience.” That […] Click to read more…

What’s Your Super Power?

(Listen to this post, here.) Do you remember your most embarrassing high school moment? I do. (Mine, I mean – I have no idea what yours was.) It was 1976 and I was a sophomore trying out for the school basketball team. I was among those “on the line” – not guaranteed a spot, but within realistic reach, assuming many things went in my favor. It was a four or five day process, during which we ran through all kinds of drills and tests. At the end of each day, […] Click to read more…
