The world has changed (you already knew that).
We can’t get together in person anymore. Which means that overnight, the marketing of your business – your very visibility – has become 100% virtual.
If you’ve been publishing an email newsletter, you’re already way ahead of the game.
Whatever your speciality – training, financial planning, coaching, consulting, copywriting, rhino taming, etc. – email newsletters are the single MOST powerful marketing tool on Earth for a professional service provider.
But … (there’s always a “But”) … if writing and pushing “send” on that newsletter are all you are doing each month, you are not taking full advantage of the hard work you are investing in the content you are creating.
Email Is No Longer Enough
Lots of people love reading emails … but lots of people don’t.
Your job is to reach your potential audience how and where it works best for them, whether that’s in “email newsletter format” or not.
Plus, your email newsletter shows up once, and then it’s gone. What you really want is a way to stay visible all month long.
That’s how you maximize your likeability, trust, expert positioning and presence … all of which leads to the clients, projects and income you want.
Here, for example, is what I do every time I write an email newsletter, IN ADDITION to sending it to the people on my list:
- Convert it to a blog and post it on my web site;
- Record it as a podcast and post that on my web site, iTunes and within the newsletter itself;
- Announce it on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook;
- Post excerpts of it (for the next several weeks) across my social media accounts;
- Post a “long format” version of it on LinkedIn;
- Offer it as “contributed content” to other content publishers;
- Compile several and (every few years) turn it into a physical book that I can sell through Amazon or give away to clients ;
- Send a copy to my mom.
A newsletter is just a glorified email. You write it, send it, and the people on your list receive it in their inbox. Terrific.
And fifteen years ago – before blogs, social media, podcasts, do-it-yourself book publishing, contributed articles, and more came to be – that was the end of it.
But today, the email itself – “the newsletter” – is just the beginning.
Thanks to many (often free, highly automatable) tools, you’ve got the ability to take what you’ve created and share it in all kinds of ways, across all kinds of platforms, with all kinds of people.
Now, they can consume your content how and when they prefer, giving you lots more exposure than just sending one email to a list.
