Do you publish an email newsletter?
Congratulations – you’ve tapped into the most – and I mean, MOST – powerful marketing tool for any professional service provider.
Whatever your specialty – training, financial planning, coaching, consulting, freelance writing, giraffe grooming, etc. – if you and your knowledge are the product, and if what you sell is similar to that of your competition, an email newsletter is the tool you need to break away from the pack.
But … (there’s always a “But”) … if writing and pushing “send” on that newsletter is all you’re doing each month, you’re leaving a lot – A LOT, A LOT, A LOT – of visibility, trust building, expert positioning and, as a result, CLIENTS and MONEY, on the table.
Email is no longer enough
Lots of people love reading emails – but lots of people don’t. Your job is to reach your potential audience how and where it works best for them.
Here’s what I do every time I write an email newsletter, IN ADDITION to sending it to the people on my list:
• Convert it to a blog and post it on my web site;
• Record it as a podcast and post that on my web site, iTunes and within the newsletter itself;
• Announce it on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook;
• Post excerpts of it (for the next several weeks) across my social media accounts;
• Post a “long format” version of it on LinkedIn;
• Offer it as “contributed content” to other content publishers;
• Compile several and (every few years) turn it into a physical book that I can give away or sell;
• Send a copy to my mom.
A newsletter is just a glorified email. You write it, send it, and the people on your list receive it in their inbox. Terrific.
And fifteen years ago – before blogs, social media, podcasts, do-it-yourself book publishing, contributed articles, and more came to be, that was the end of it.
But today, the email itself – “the newsletter” – is just Step One.
Thanks to many (often free, highly automatable) tools, you’ve got the ability to take what you’ve created and share it in all kinds of ways, across all kinds of platforms, with all kinds of people.
That allows them to consume your content in whatever way they prefer … and, it gives you lots more exposure than just sending one email to your list.
