I don’t have a single client that I don’t like and enjoy spending time with. Not one.
But it’s no accident.
It’s the result of choosing the right clients (yes, you get to choose!), walking away from the wrong ones (ditto), and managing the relationships and work in an ongoing and deliberate way.
And it’s not just good for me – it’s good for my clients, too. When you connect and work well together, everyone benefits.
Not only are there fewer miscommunications and crossed signals, the work is easier, the results are better, and everyone involved is happier.
But I didn’t start out that way.
I made a lot of mistakes in my first few years as a solo.
I was good at “the work” but, as someone who at that point had zero experience as a non-employee, I had no idea how to deal with things like work agreements, payments and deposits, project scope, or difficult situations.
And I knew nothing about how to tell the difference – before work began – between a great client and a problem client. It never even occurred to me to think of it that way. I figured a “great client” was anyone who was willing to pay my fee.
