I unavoidably ended up in a three hour meeting at a client’s office last Friday. Unavoidable, because although I try to steer clear of anything that takes three hours and doesn’t involve sunshine and/or beer, sometimes you just have to be there.
There were four people from the client side, four from the creative agency, and me (the E-Newsletter guy). The head of marketing is an old friend, so after the meeting we went back to his office to catch up.
“What did you think of the meeting?,” he asked.
I said, “You know what, it reminded me of why I like working for myself. In a big company like yours, long meetings with lots of participants seem to be a necessity. The thing I love about working solo, on the other hand, is that I get paid to do my thing. And as long as I do it well, I pretty much come and go as I please and rarely get involved in this kind of thing.”
He gave me one of those “please take me with you” looks and it was just a nice reminder of the freedom we all have as solo professionals.
